Hatha Yoga is a branch of yoga and in Sanskrit has multiple important meanings. The word hatha means "force" or "Discipline of Force." Yoga stresses mastery of the body as a way of attaining a state of spiritual perfection. The mind is withdrawn from external objects, focusing inwards on breath, body and mind. The history of Hatha yoga started around 400 A.D. with 196 sutras written in Sanskrit by Patanjali Maharishi. Patanjali described hatha yoga as consisting of 8 limbs, or disciplines, referred to as the eightfold path.

Hatha can also be translated into ha meaning "sun" and "moon." Helping a person to balance masculine aspects, the active, hot sun with the feminine aspects, the receptive, cool, moon, within all of us. Hatha yoga is a path towards creating balance and uniting opposites.
